Glacier Bay, Alaska

The ship spent almost an entire day slowly cruising down an inlet of Alaska known as Glacier Bay. It is given that name for the obvious reason that there are many glaciers that can be seen down that path. The whole bay used to be covered with ice a few hundred years ago, but over time the ice melted and retreated slowly back into the mountains. The boat you see in this first picture is not the cruise ship, but it will give you an idea of the size of that glacier.



That 'river' that looks like it is coming out of the mountain below is actually a glacier. It gets those dark lines in it because that portion is actually two glaciers that are curving through the mountains and joining down at the water. As they scrape along the mountains they take with them debris that turns the ice dark in certain sections.


If we look like we are freezing our balls off, it's because we are.

One of the glaciers had a river of water flowing out of the bottom of it. Very cool.
