Rookie Parents

Tonight was our first trip to urgent care with C. Don't worry, he's fine...hence the title of this post.

About a week ago, I noticed C had developed a diaper rash that looked a little gnarly in a few spots. It was all in the front, around his private parts. He doesn't get diaper rash very often, but the few times he has, it didn't look this bad. There were a few spots that were just sore and red looking, but not bumpy. I really didn't think much of it and started slathering him up with Desitin and even Aquaphor (in case it just happened to be a patch of eczema that headed down south). Well, needless to say, the cream didn't do anything to make the redness go away. My mom noticed the rash and suggested that maybe it was a yeast rash and to just pick up some Lotrimin over the counter.

So today I was at Target, found the Lotrimin, but noticed that it said to consult a doctor for children under 2 years. I figured I'd pick it up anyways, call the doc when I got home, and he'd probably tell me to go ahead and use it.

Well, I got home at 4:30pm and called the ped's office. As usual, they had the nurse call me back. She called back at 5pm, and asked me to describe his rash. I made the mistake of using the word "blister" to describe a few of the patches that didn't really look like rashes. Of course, this set off all kinds of red flags in her computer and she said I needed to bring him in tonight. I tried to explain that I shouldn't have said blister, that it was really more like a sunburn, but it was too late. She had to play the safe card and insisted that I take him to urgent care since his doctor's office was closed to rule out anything serious. I really didn't want to go to urgent care over a diaper rash, but thought to myself that I would feel guilty if it did turn out to be serious and I just ignored her advice.

So we went...and instead of simply treating his rash with a $7 tube of over-the-counter anti-fungal cream, we paid for a $7 tube of over-the-counter anti-fungal cream PLUS a $50 urgent care copay. My mom was right...it was yeast. Bastard fungus.

Hahaha! Well, at least we know that your little boy is very well taken care of. A $57 diaper rash is proof :)
